Drawing Publication Wk1

Week one:

This week I was unable to attend as I was away on professional experience. However from the lecture notes this subject is about getting your art works out there in the art world and showing the different ways that you can be published and make your foot print in the art world.

Some ways to do this include the traditional art gallery, improvised spaces, even Facebook and online galleries such as Deviant Art.

For the tutorial this week we were asked a series of questions about possible mentors that we find an inspiration in publication and with skills.

Tutorial Task One:

Search for an artist during the tutorial and show me who could be referred to as a guide for the way their publications have been produced. Show me how you could respond to one or more of these examples in your own way with your work.

I have seen a couple of Kayleen West’s artworks and I like her use of colour and brush work in her paintings. When I looked up how she has published her works on the internet I found quite a few examples. This includes:

· A website: http://www.kayleenwest.com.au/main.html

· A newsletter her audience can subcribe too

· A number of public and private galleries

· Art competitions (see: http://www.kayleenwest.com.au/html/awards.htm )

· And an online journal available on her website.

How I would respond to this in my own work as I would take advantage of the online environment for publishing as I already am apart of Deviant Art (http://www.deviantart.com/ ) which is a social network for artist to publish their works and allows others to search those art works and ‘watch’ or follow a particular artist. This is a great starting point for any artist as it allows your works to ‘get out there.’

Tutorial Task Two:

Identify your strengths and weaknesses and place images and statements in your research journal. This includes recognising:

a) Stylistic identities for your work, mentor artist and their works and how this is a strength

b) What your new work will introduce to advance potential publication of this work and your career. This may also relate to the work you have produced that will be considered for the end of year exhibitions.

One of my biggest weaknesses is ‘messy’ media in particular charcoal. I just feel as much as I try I cannot produce anything of acceptable quality from using this media. However, I still love drawing and I think one of my stronger points is drawing with pencils and painting with oils and acrylics. The majority of my works are created this way and I think I have produced some pretty good works from these two media.

I think I should list two people that I think are my inspiration from my weakness and strength.

My weakness: Charcoal

Inspiration: Jim Meskimen
Location: http://www.appliedsilliness.com/charcoal_art.html

When looking through Meskimen’s work I was very jealous of the use of soft tones and shading skills that have been used within his artworks. All the images have a soft feel to them and use light and dark appropriately. I think my main problem is not being able to control the charcoal with lights and darks and making an awful mess.

My Strength: Painting

Inspiration: Molly Cranch
location: http://www.roadsidescholar.com/2008/08/25/molly-cranch-paintings/

When looking for an inspiration for a painter I wanted to find an artist that used the same soft technique that Jim Meskimen has used in his charcoal works. This then would give me something to practise with so that I can one day refine my technique with charcoal and become a better artist.

Tutorial Task Three:

What identifies your project as exciting and worthy of people’s time to read?

This can relate to major artists and how they identify with a topic through their practised style and conceptual development.

You will need to develop a research journal that identifies your understanding of where you work can be located and how this is part of the contemporary art world.

Plan for how you are going to publish your work. You can develop your plan on how you are going to publish your work over the semester. What take/ spin will you take on your work and publication.

At the moment I don’t know what I want to use to pubises my work but I have been thinking about using the online form of publishing because this gives almost anyone access to view my works and see what I have to offer. This semester I really want to try something different rather then painting and drawing all the time. I do have skills in a number of different media however I’m not sure which ones I will be able to use in this class. I think I want to try something that isn’t used all that often but is effective and shows off my skills.

At the moment I have a Facebook page publishing myself as a visual artist for all too see…
